The Challenge: Operating on Borrowed Time

A major electrical device manufacturer found themselves in an increasingly unsafe situation. Their Jira Server 7.0.0 instance had surpassed its end-of-life long ago and had both its support and license maintenance expired, creating a genuine, dangerous business risk. 

The organization’s IT teams were operating without a safety net without access to security patches or support. Compliance gaps were getting larger with their ability to respond to security threats becoming compromised. On top of this, the high cost of maintaining infrastructure in-house, including servers and storage, complicated the situation even further as it required more investments and dedicated IT teams that could have been working more effectively and strategically.

Mumo Systems began the migration by conducting stakeholder workshops with engineering teams, assessed their existing environments, validated connectivity requirements, and worked on detailed migration runbooks. This was essential to uncover the complexity of migrating from an unsupported server and properly plan ahead. 

Next, it was time to create new Jira Cloud sites and run test cycles to discover and fix any issues before the production cutover. Every iteration of this step was documented to create repeatable steps for a final, smooth migration. Throughout the whole process, Mumo Systems made sure to take project teams through stage by stage so they were confident in user acceptability testing, validating data integrity, and refining configurations. 

When it came to final migration it was best to execute over a weekend to minimize any disruptions. After Mumo Systems went through final validations, they were able to hand off a fully functional Cloud environment.
